Our New News Set

scott-mtr.jpgmtr-2-shot.jpg

The NBC 5 Team may be a little giddy this weekend.  We’re reporting from our new news set.  It is bright and colorful and looks very good in crisp, clear High Definition.  You may also notice a difference if you do not have a HD set.

The new set provides plenty of places for NBC 5 Weekend Today Anchor Scott Friedman to deliver different stories.

He also gets to interact with our Weather Team (this weekend, Meteorologist Michael Hammer is filling in for James Aydelott) from a variety of angles.

What doesn’t change is our commitment to quality reporting and storytelling in the communities across North Texas.  Please tell us what you think in the comments section below.

Giving Back to Fort Worth

class-plaque.jpg

This morning on NBC 5 Today at 8am, Kristi Nelson profiled an inspiring story in Fort Worth.

 hughes-coach.jpg

As a lasting tribute to Coach Robert Hughes, some of his oldest students donated a new Learning Center at the Southeast Multi-Agency YMCA.  Hughes had a 47 year career coaching at Terrell and Dunbar High Schools.

The center has ten computers where children can brush up education and also get help for everything from bullys to acne.

The Terrell High School Class of 1965 worked to open the center and dedicated to Hughes so the next generations have a greater opportunities for success.  Read more about the YMCA Fort Worth Youth Center at:

This morning, Texas Democrats are squaring off again over the choice between Presidential Candidates Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama.

The Democrats are holding state and county conventions today.  NBC 5’s Omar Villafranca reported live from the 23rd Senatorial District Convention in South Dallas on the big crowds who showed up this morning.  More than 8,000 people expected to show up.

Stuffed Baked Pears with Cranberries
Serves 4
This is a nice baked fruit dessert. It would also be a nice treat to enjoy for a weekend brunch. Prepare ahead, refrigerate, and warm just before serving, or served chilled.
4 ripe pears
1/4 cup dried cranberries
3 tablespoons sliced almonds
2 1/2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 teaspoon lemon zest
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1/4 cup light corn syrup
1/4 cup water
1 teaspoon vanilla
pear-carol.jpg
Peel pears leaving stems intact. Using a melon baller gadget, core pears through the bottom end (not all the way to the stem). In a small bowl, combine cranberries, almonds, brown sugar, lemon zest, and lemon juice; mix well. Stuff each pear evenly with filling. Place stuffed pears upright in a baking dish. Mix corn syrup with water and vanilla and pour over pears. Bake, covered, in a 350° F oven for 1 hour 15 minutes. Serve warm or chilled.

Too Much Spring Break?

6-flags-ride.jpg

One of the great things about being in Texas is that while the rest of the country is shivering in cold and snow, we’ve got flowers and trees blooming and very warm temperatures.

 6-flags-people.jpg

That also means thousands are flocking to Six Flags Over Texas in Arlington and the Fort Worth Zoo.  Both places experienced huge crowds on Friday, the last day of Spring Break.

Both places are also bracing for big crowds for this weekend.

Southwest Turkey Wrap, Serves 4 Pep up your kids’ lunch with this fun sandwich. Pack one for yourself as well! 4 tortillas (southwestern-style or whole-wheat)
4 slices colby cheese
4 slices smoked turkey
4 lettuce leaves
8 thin carrot sticks

 carol-sandwich.jpg
1/2 cup ranch dressing Place a tortilla on a cutting board. Place a slice of cheese, smoked turkey, a lettuce leaf and 2 carrots sticks on the tortilla. Roll up the tortilla, and spear with toothpicks to hold. Cut on a diagonal for a decorative look. Repeat with remaining ingredients for four sandwich wraps. When packing in a lunch box—okay, ready for this?—wrap wraps in plastic wrap! Serve ranch dressing on the side for dipping. (And remember to remove the toothpicks before eating!) Notes:
A pluot is a cross between a plum and apricot. It’s a source of vitamin A and is sometimes referred to as a dinosaur egg.

Rabbits on Easter

rabbit-lindsay.jpg black-white-rabbit.jpg

Thoughts of Easter and Spring may inspire you to think about adopting a rabbit as a pet.  But many animal groups say that’s a bad idea.  Your heart may be in the right place but you may not realize rabbits take a lot of care and can live for a long, long time.

 diane-rabbit.jpg

Today at 6:00 a.m., Diana Leggett, the President of Wild Rescue, Inc./Rabbit Rescue talked about some of the rabbits she’s rescued from owners who didn’t realize the responsibility that come with the furry friends.  She came in with two rabbits who were abandoned and now looking to be adopted.

Her charity is dedicated to rescuing and re-homing domestic rabbits as companion animals.
